Respect & manners
- You need an NZeTA (and pay the tourist levy, IVL) before you travel, unless you have a visa.
- Biosecurity is very strict: declare all food, plants, outdoor gear and hiking boots on arrival. Fines are instant.
- Greet with "kia ora". On a marae (Māori meeting ground), follow your hosts and the welcome ceremony.
- Don't sit on tables or touch people's heads: both are sacred (tapu) in Māori culture.
- Tipping is not expected.
- Drive on the left, and take your time: roads are winding and narrow.
