Accessibility & disability

• Airlines and airports offer free assistance (wheelchair, help boarding): request it when you book, at least 48 hours before the flight.
• Medicines with codeine, strong painkillers and psychotropic drugs can be banned or need a permit: bring the prescription and check with the embassy.
• Carry your medicines in your hand luggage, in their original boxes, with a prescription or doctor's letter in English.
• Outside big cities, ramps, lifts and accessible toilets are rare, and pavements can be uneven: plan accommodation and transport in advance.
• Ask hotels for photos or details of "accessible" rooms: the word does not mean the same thing everywhere.
• Guide and assistance dogs follow the same entry rules as pets (microchip, vaccinations): prepare the papers early.
• Hidden disability? The sunflower lanyard is recognised in many airports to ask discreetly for more time or help.
• Check plugs and voltage before charging an electric wheelchair or a medical device.
