Respeto y modales

  • A friendly "bom dia" (good morning) or "boa tarde" (good afternoon) goes a long way.
  • Portuguese is not Spanish: a few words in Portuguese are much appreciated.
  • Bread, olives and starters put on the table are usually not free: say no if you don't want them.
  • Tipping: rounding up or about 5–10% in restaurants is a nice extra.
  • Lisbon's streets are steep and slippery: wear good shoes.
