• Use registered taxis or ride apps, especially at night.
• Don't show expensive phones, cameras or jewellery in the street.
• Tipping is expected: about 10–15% in restaurants, and small tips for car guards and petrol attendants.
• South Africa has 12 official languages: a few words in the local one are appreciated.
• Drive on the left, and never stop in remote areas at night.
• Respect people's privacy in townships: visit with a local guide.
