Respect & manners

  • In mosques: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered, women cover their hair (scarves are often lent at the door). Avoid prayer times.
  • Respect Atatürk and the Turkish flag: insulting them is a crime.
  • Accept a glass of tea: it is a sign of friendship.
  • Bargaining is normal in bazaars, not in shops with fixed prices.
  • Tipping: about 5–10% in restaurants.
  • Public displays of affection are frowned upon outside big cities.
