Civilité & respect
- In mosques: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered, women cover their hair (scarves are often lent at the door). Avoid prayer times.
- Respect Atatürk and the Turkish flag: insulting them is a crime.
- Accept a glass of tea: it is a sign of friendship.
- Bargaining is normal in bazaars, not in shops with fixed prices.
- Tipping: about 5–10% in restaurants.
- Public displays of affection are frowned upon outside big cities.
