Civilidade e respeito

  • A small bow is the usual greeting. A handshake is fine with foreigners.
  • Take your shoes off when you enter a home, a ryokan, and some temples and restaurants: look for a shoe rack or a raised floor.
  • Don't tip: it is not expected and can cause confusion.
  • Be quiet on trains: no phone calls, and phones on silent mode.
  • Never stick your chopsticks upright in rice and never pass food from chopsticks to chopsticks: both are linked to funerals.
  • In hot springs (onsen), wash before getting in, no swimsuit. Some onsen refuse tattoos: ask first.
  • Queue neatly on the platform, and walk on the indicated side of escalators.
