Travelling with pets

  • Japan asks for a microchip, two rabies vaccinations, a rabies antibody test and then a 180-day wait; notify the animal quarantine service at least 40 days before arrival, or your pet may be held in quarantine.
  • Airlines have their own rules (cabin pets usually under about 8 kg with the bag, snub-nosed breeds often refused in the hold): book your pet's place early.
  • Check the rules to come back home too: they can be stricter than for leaving.
